A Quick Fix or Failure?

Fad diets aren’t worth the effort. Here’s why.

Maybe your beach vacation, your cousin’s wedding, or your high school graduation is in a few months and you want to shed a few (or a lot of) pounds to look your best. Or perhaps you’re tired of being overweight and want to lose weight for good. Whatever the reason, you may be drawn toward fad diets.

Today, there are hundreds of diet plans out there for you to try. Each one promises weight loss and most of them live up to their promises—at least for a little while. Most of these diets are as simple as avoiding certain foods, eating other foods, and cutting back on calories to lose weight.

Fad diets are popular because they offer a quick fix. Unfortunately, these fixes often become failures in the long run. Here are six reasons why.

Reason 1: They’re Unsustainable

The main problem with fad diets is that they typically don’t produce lasting weight loss. Whether you try a low-carb, ketogenic, lemonade, high-protein, baby food, or cabbage soup diet, the rules you must follow are do-able for a few weeks or months, but they’re not sustainable forever. As soon as you quit the diet and return to your former way of eating, the weight slowly piles back on. In many cases, more weight returns than what you originally lost.

Reason 2: They’re Difficult

A second reason why fad diets fail is because they’re hard. It’s not easy depriving yourself of your favorite foods, eliminating whole food groups, or restricting your options. Many people feel miserable on a fad diet. Drastically reducing your calorie intake can make you cranky and hungry all the time. When everyone around you is enjoying his or her favorite foods, you feel left out and deprived. So eventually you cave and put on more pounds than you’ve ever had.

Reason 3: Their Definition

A problem with fad diets is they are just that: a diet rather than a lifestyle change. These fads offer a short-term fix for a long-term problem. Even the word diet sounds negative, restrictive, and unpleasant. No wonder no one wants to go on one. It’s easy for people seeking to lose weight by dieting to focus on everything they can’t eat. When this happens, cooking food and facing mealtimes becomes a dreaded chore.

Reason 4: They’re Unhealthy

One reason why fad diets lack sustainability is because they’re unhealthy. Remember that your body was designed to function with a balance of carbohydrates, protein, fat, and other nutrients. When you eliminate a single type of food or food groups, you may miss out on certain key nutrients needed for good health. You may not notice ill effects for a few days, weeks, or months of dieting, but health problems may eventually set in if the diet is continued for long.

Reason 5: They’re Damaging

You’ll lose weight on a fad diet, but along with the fat, you’ll lose muscle. When you stop dieting, the weight you regain will be mostly fat. Muscle burns more calories than fat, so after the diet your metabolism is slower than before. Once this occurs, you’ll need to eat even fewer calories to avoid gaining weight. And if you go on and off fad diets time again, this yo-yo dieting damages your metabolism, making lasting weight loss that much harder to achieve.

Reason 6: They’re Unnecessary

In some cases, your weight problem may not be due to poor diet or lack of exercise. An underlying medical problem may be to blame and no amount of dieting or exercise can fix it. Medications, thyroid problems, and hormonal imbalances can all lead to weight gain. Insulin resistance, food allergies, food sensitivities, environmental toxins, or unbalanced gut bacteria may affect your metabolism and food absorption, making it more difficult to lose weight. Get to the bottom of your weight issues and you’ll find a customized way to shed it for good.
